How To Handle Orthodontic Emergencies When Away From Home

Published on July 22, 2026

Orthodontic emergencies can happen anywhere and anytime! Spontaneous issues are exactly that, random! If something happens while you are on vacation, what do you do? This blog will help prepare you for any possible situation!

What is an Orthodontic Emergency?

Many times, orthodontic issues can be cared for by yourself until you can get into your orthodontist office for a fix. If you are in an accident and have injured your teeth or jaws, you should visit a dentist, orthodontist, or dental surgeon as quickly as possible depending on the severity of the injury.

If your issue is immensely uncomfortable, you may be able to make an appointment with an orthodontist in your vacation location. Sometimes other orthodontists are not able to help you because they do not know your treatment plan. Always make sure you contact your orthodontist office before visiting a different office.

What to Do in an Emergency

Before you go on vacation, it would be a good idea to make an emergency dental kit just in case. Some items that you can include in your kit would be soft wax, a pencil eraser to help push back wires that are poking out, and an oral numbing gel recommended by your dentist or orthodontist. Antibacterial mouthwash is also a good addition in case you get any cuts in your mouth.

It is always a good idea to call your orthodontist as soon as possible if there is an issue with your braces or other orthodontic tools. They can give you quick solutions and book you in for an appointment when you return.

Broken Bracket

If your bracket has broken off, generally you can wait until you return from vacation to have it fixed. In the meantime, if the bracket is not causing any issues, leave it where it is. If the bracket becomes too uncomfortable, using a soft wax to cover it will be the best option. If it is still too irritating, you may be able to gently open and remove it from the wire. Keep your loose bracket in a safe space and take it with you to your next orthodontist appointment.

Broken Wire

If your wire has broken, you can use an eraser to gently push the broken pieces towards your teeth so they do not rub or catch on your gums or cheeks. It is not recommended that you attempt to cut the wire yourself. This can cause more harm than good. Instead, use a soft wax to cover the sharp ends until you can make an appointment with your orthodontist when you return.

Other broken Orthodontic Appliances

The quick fix for this can depend on the type of appliance you have. Fixing a broken palette expander can be very different than fixing a broken band. In this case, call your orthodontist to see what they recommend.

Sore Mouth

A sore mouth is a common result with orthodontic care. If the pain is unbearable, it may be in your best interest to go to an emergency room. Otherwise, some over the counter pain killers may be your best option.

Conclusion

Two key takeaways from this blog post are: make sure you have an emergency kit ready, and to always call your orthodontist as soon as any issue appears. We can help give you temporary solutions and assess your situation over the phone until you return home from your vacation.
